Green Supply Chain

The main focus of Green Supply Chain Consulting is to help clients transform their setup to become more efficient, reduce supply chain carbon emissions and save costs along the way.

Approach:

To ensure a project is run smoothly and efficiently, a structure is needed to guide us towards our goals. Therefore we have developed the 6-step Green Wolf project approach. We start with documenting your current setup and defining the scope of the project, to avoid scope creep and misunderstandings. The next step is to establish a carbon footprint baseline in your supply chain (how else can you measure progress?). Afterwards, we address strategic emission reductions, and from there move into tactical activities in transportation and warehousing. Finally, we can guide you towards a carbon neutral supply chain and provide ongoing support in implementation and carbon calculation.

Strategic considerations:

The greenest shipment is the one you do not have to ship. We provide guidance in the strategy arena for shipment avoidance, distance reduction, and the shift to environmentally friendlier transport modes. The areas of focus include planning & forecasting, manufacturing & postponement, and the decision, where to manufacture which portion of your product portfolio (offshoring vs. near shoring vs. local sites). We also look at your strategic network design, verifying the ongoing trend to setting up additional sites for distance minimization – and we can easily calculate the emissions effect of various DC location scenarios. This is the opportunity to combine freight cost reduction initiatives with emissions reductions, a great story to tell your clients!

Transportation:

Freight transportation is the area of your supply chain with the highest cost and emissions reduction potential. There are endless possibilities to improve your score on both fronts! Green Wolf will provide you with a broad set of solutions in the areas of:
  • Transport mode selection and mode shifting
  • Packaging, product size and cube maximization
  • Unproductive distance reduction (e.g. empty miles, backhauls, cooperation, DC structure)
  • Supply chain slow down (e.g. change in customer ordering, slow steaming)
  • Mode specific actions (e.g. truck technology & driver behavior)
Most activities in this field will provide you with fast cost savings and quick payback on investments!

Warehousing:

Many opportunities to make your building more sustainable exist today, affecting lighting, heating & cooling, material handling equipment, or water efficient landscaping. However, we also want you to look at employee behavior & motivation, and work on improving the process & space efficiency of your operation. The greenest warehouse space is the one you do not need at all, saving you costs on the lease, electricity, water, and gas. Many changes can be implemented without having to make huge investments! But should you be motivated to go a step further, we can guide you towards a greener, LEED compatible building as well!

Carbon Calculation:

Through our partnership with Green Shipping, Green Wolf can offer a state of the art tool for the exact calculation of freight carbon emissions. The calculator uses existing shipment/ tracking data from your TMS or ERP, and provides automatic upload capabilities of any number of shipment data sets for carbon calculation. The tool is fully web based and can be used on a SaaS (Software as a Service) basis, which ensures variable costs on a very affordable level.

Input data includes origin & destination zip code/ state/ country, transshipment points, weight, and transport mode; whether you ship by truck, air, ocean, rail, or package carrier, all modes are covered! Emission results are provided by transport leg, so even multi-modal shipments can be easily calculated. Currently more than 50 countries are established in the tool, covering the vast majority of global trade volume. Emissions are based on widely accepted standards like Greenhouse Gas Protocol and EPA.

All emissions and freight cost information can be easily reported on through a sophisticated dashboard, with various methods to analyze, dissect, and present your data. Our partners at www.greenshipping.com can provide detailed information on the dashboard any time.

Cost & metrics:

You cannot manage what you don’t measure – this old saying still holds true!Green Wolf will help you establish an emissions and cost baseline to measure your progress against, quantify and document cost & emissions savings, and work with you to implement customized metrics/ KPI’s (Key Performance Indicators). While you can choose from a selection of standard metrics, we do believe in the benefits of using metrics tailored to your business and reporting needs. Otherwise you might collect data and calculate metrics you really don’t need – what a waste!

Sustainability

Green Teams:

How do you get started to embark on the journey towards sustainability? Who should be in a green team and how do we set it up so it can function properly? How do we motivate our employees with some quick wins?Green Wolf can help you in all of these areas. While the official green team leader should be one of your staff, Green Wolf will provide guidance and structure, workshops and training, whatever you need. The most popular format is a weekly call/ meeting of 1-2 hours, which allows the employees to continue doing their jobs, and gives space for homework and implementation. It is fantastic to see your teams get all excited about going green!

Education:

In many cases, it makes sense to weave educational sessions into the Green Team project. In easy to learn chunks, Green Wolf presents to your team everything from sustainability basics (what is an offset?) to regulations, activities of your competitors/ industry, to success stories and green supply chain basics. The main goal is to get a discussion going and to use the new found knowledge for direct application in your own business. This ensures Green Team motivation and success stories the management can talk about! All trainings are specifically tailored to your business and your industry.
